Brothers and Sisters,

As you may know, as of October 1, 2008, I have retired for General Motors, and my term as President of Local 10 will end.  I feel truly blessed to have served my union in several capacities for over 30 years. I have seen many changes in GM and in my union, including being part of one of those changes when you helped me make history as the first black President of UAW Local 10.  It would be impossible for me to personally contact all of you who view this website, so I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was an honor and a priveledge to work with you as a co-worker and for you as a leader.

As I leave my Presidency, I know that Local 10 is in good hands, as David Buice will takeover as our new President. I am very confident in David's ability to lead this Local, and hope that you show him the same support you have shown me. Thank you again, and may God bless each and every one of you and your families. I look forward to seeing you at the Retiree meetings!

In Solidarity,

Willie Monroe Jr.

There were 227 employees retire in the month of October 2008, the single largest group of retirements in Local 10 history, representing over 7500 years of seniority in a the group.  Congratulations to this group and to all the members who have retired over the years. History was also made when Brother Bobby "6 Cylinder" Henson retired with 54.2 years of service, the most of any Retiree ever at the Doraville Plant.

Congratulations to the newly elected UAW Local 10 Executive Board:

David Buice-President
Belinda Echols-Vice President
Sherri Phillips-Recording Secretary
Kathy Fowler-Financial Secretary
Harold Wise-Trustee
Michael Petersen-Trustee
Bob Humphery-Trustee
Kenny Bradford-Guide
Warren "Mitch" Mitchell-Seargant At Arms

A very special congratulations to Belinda Echols on becoming the first female elected Vice President of Local 10!

Recently we have had many classes offered at the Union Hall paid through your tuition assistance program.  This information is sent to you by mail. If you have not recently received information regarding classes such as computer courses, home inspection, financial planning, etc., this could mean your address is incorrect at the Union Hall. Please update by calling (770) 457-3128.

The GM Doraville Plant Last Reunion Tour on August 9, 2008 was a huge success. Special thanks go to all who attended as well as all of those who volunteered their time to make the tour such a special event. Pictures from the Reunion Tour can now be seen in the News Section.

Despite the high cost of gasoline and the threat of bad weather, the September meeting was well attended.  My apology for the meeting lasting as long as it did.  Sometimes we don't get together on scheduled speakers and that's what happened today.  We tell all speakers that the Retirees can't sit very long and to try and limit their time.  Hopefully this won't happen again. We invite all candidates for office to speak at the meetings and Mrs. Jim Martin was here today in place of her husband who had a prior engagement.  Dr. Jeanne Perrine spoke briefly and told the Retirees that she would give a discount on some of our Benefits.  She is an optometristand is located in the I.B.E.W. Building (the same location as the UAW Area Office and Drop-In Center).  J.C. Phillips of Local 882 gave a report and encouraged everyone to vote for the candidates that are most favorable to labor.  The UAW CAP Council is sending out literature on the candidates that have been endorsed and we encourage you to take a good look at these candidates versus their opponents. Some of you have asked about the Christmas meal and meeting.  As you know, there will not be a Care and Share program this year due to the plant closing.  This opens the Union Hall for us to have our regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 16.  We will a catered meal and hopefully we can have a very short meeting that will not delay our Christmas Meal.Arrangements have been made with Blue Cross/Blue Shield to start having a Representative at the Union Hall beginning with the October meeting.Hope to see you at the next meeting

Fraternally,

Zane Payne
